FOWM Story

The Friends of Warneford Meadow (FOWM) is a community volunteer group originally formed in 2006 by local residents in Oxford. We organised to oppose plans by the local NHS Mental Healthcare Trust, which intended to sell off the protected 20-acre meadow for development. The FOWM campaigned aggressively against the destruction of the meadow's recreational, aesthetic, and ecological value.

Following a multi-year local campaign that included raising tens of thousands of pounds for legal representation, we helped permanently safeguard the land and backed a formal application to register the meadow as a Town Green. This legal designation was finally secured in 2009 and upheld after a High Court legal challenge in 2010.

Warneford Meadow continues to face nearby development pressures and today we collaborate with local groups and Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust to maintain this much-loved space and ensure its ecological and community benefits remain intact.
